This beautiful and heart-wrenching story about family, transmission and self-acceptance shows how Treacher Collins Syndrome, a genetic disorder, has prevented Ricardo from pronouncing his own name. His life is one in which he grew up struggling to find his voice – both literally and figuratively. Through Ricardo’s personal journey, from learning how to live with his condition to undergoing multiple surgeries, which in turn led to questions about his own identity, The Broken R is a reminder of how filmmaking can not only be a perfect tool for documenting life, but can be an essential aid in exploring and accepting who we are.
