An intimate portrait of world-renowned Morna singer Cesária Évora, whose talent took her from abject poverty to stardom and the concert halls of the world.
Morna is a style of music and dance popular in Cape Verde, the group of islands off the coast of Senegal, which Cesária Évora called home. She was known as the ‘Barefoot Diva’, for her penchant of performing on stage without footwear. But it was her spellbinding voice, which finally attracted international attention some three decades into her career, that would prove her legacy. Ana Sofia Fonseca’s film, which features incredible concert footage, charts Évora’s gradual rise to fame and the success that accompanied each of her album releases in the 1990s and 2000s, culminating in the Grammy for ‘Voz d’Amor’ in 2004.
