When a young filmmaker investigates her grandfather’s work on the 1990 Dominican elections, she uncovers a web of secrets that still ensnares her family.

Filmmaker Nayibe Tavares-Abel first read about her grandfather in her middle school history textbook. Even then, she knew something wasn’t right. A well-respected jurist and the pride of her household, Abuelo Froilán Tavares was publicly disgraced for his role in overseeing the Dominican Republic’s disputed 1990 elections, when dictator Joaquín Balaguer seized power for the third time. But withheld records and hushed family conversations tell a different story, one that Nayibe is committed to unearthing, despite her loved ones’ pleas for her safety. Armed with a camera and a renewed call for justice, she embarks on a dizzying investigation through the dust-ridden archives and teeming city streets of this strikingly beautiful but troubled land. What Colossal reveals is that democracy may be brittle, but it’s strong enough to support change.
