Save for one brief moment, Marker’s photo roman solely comprises beautifully composed photographs. It tells the story of a prisoner in a post-apocalyptic world who is sent through time, where he falls in love. But little does he realise that his destiny is inextricably linked to his own past.
‘It’s not strictly a documentary, but it is documenting a life – albeit a fictional one – through still images. It’s like so many documentaries, like so many films, which exist beyond easy definition and draw on so many different styles.’ – AK
