Journalist Zhanna Agalakova, whose daughter questions her political beliefs, confronts her role in Russia’s propaganda campaign and her notions of national pride and identity.

Zhanna Agalakova is a foreign correspondent for Channel One, the state-controlled Russian broadcaster. When she wins an award, her daughter Alice describes her work propaganda. Zhanna sees it as service to her homeland. But 14-year-old Alice’s political awakening places Zhanna at a crossroads. With her Italian husband Giorgio as witness, the family journeys through the Russian countryside, turning the camera on themselves as a way of grappling with unfolding events. Zhanna attempts to instil national pride in Alice, but her daughter’s resistance reveals deeper tensions around identity, inherited shame and hard truths regarding responsibility that Zhanna refuses to face. As conflict in Ukraine escalates and political differences increasingly fracture the family, Zhanna’s complicity, humanity and contradictions become more apparent. This is an intimate portrait of the ideologies we embrace, whether by choice or inheritance.
