Dubbed the United States’ first climate refugees, the residents of Isle de Jean Charles resettle to higher ground on the mainland to escape rising sea levels.

Located on a ridge off the coast of Louisiana and connected to the mainland by a single road, Isle de Jean Charles has been home to a largely Indigenous American community for generations. But rising sea levels and worsening storms, which have already caused homes to be lifted onto stilt-like structures, have forced the residents to up stakes and resettle in the ‘New Isle’ – the first project of its kind in the USA. Through the eyes of the Brunet family, Lowland Kids charts the community resettlement process – with residents torn between the idyllically beautiful wetlands they have long called home, and their future safety and security. Expanding on director Sandra Winther’s short of the same name, this is a stylish and vital feature debut about surviving in a precarious world.
