Like many intersex people, Jim underwent medical interventions early in life. This film traces the fraudulent research that justified such treatment.
After demanding their medical records, Jim discovers that like many intersex people a gender presentation, carried out through invasive operations and HRT, was constructed for them in childhood. It is common practice for the intersex child to never be told the truth of what happened to them, one that this documentary uncovers. We follow the aftermath of the invasive interventions, supported by fraudulent research and celebrated by doctors, though the real results show a very different story. As Jim makes very clear, this is not a transgender story. It's one that highlights the problem of a binary understanding of gender, asking us to consider the continued medicalisation of our bodies and our identities, and questions who it is that tells us who we are.
