Carina Mia Wong and Alex Simmons’ life-affirming film unfolds in a live action role-playing camp that offers neurodivergent, queer and self-proclaimed ‘nerdy’ teenagers space for self-discovery.
Drawn by their love of live action role-playing (LARP), the attendees at this camp in upstate New York represent all walks of life. There’s Dexter, a 15-year-old aspiring writer who articulates profound insights into life, existence and the search for love as he confronts the inner ‘enemy’: his anxiety. Other camp members have their own issues, but in role playing they find a release – a form of expression that frees them of inhibitions or restraints, where their personalities flourish and where any kind of judgement is not welcome. Wong and Simmons’ film never condescends, taking its subjects’ passions seriously and respectfully. In doing so, it finds in LARP an extraordinary tool for self-expression and an activity that offers those involved a level playing field rarely accorded in the wider world.
