In this powerful and inspiring film, an Afghan filmmaker documents repression by the Taliban and resistance to it across three generations of females in her family.

As the shadow of Taliban rule looms, journalist and filmmaker Najiba Noori documents her mother Hawa's desire for independence and her dedication to girls’ education. Four decades ago, Hawa was a child bride to a man 30 years her senior. Later in life, she found fulfilment in adult literacy classes and traditional embroidery. Najiba’s film intertwines Hawa’s story with that of Zahra, the filmmaker’s young niece. With the Taiban’s return to power, the female population once again experience fear; Zahra is forced into an arranged marriage and the new regime also threatens Najiba’s way of life, forcing her into exile. Writing Hawa shines a necessary light on the Taliban’s repressive measures, but also celebrates the women and girls who are writing their way to freedom.
