Misuse of power, discrimination, sexual, and other forms of harassment are a reality in most spaces - in particular against traditionally marginalised and equity-seeking groups - and the documentary industry is no exception. Marked by a scarcity of financial and other resources, the documentary industry often prides itself on being nicer, more communal, more diverse, and cosier than other creative sectors. Yet, in our field, there is a startling lack of honesty and accountability measures regarding the very programs and platforms that purport to support filmmakers. Given the small size of the traveling, transnational community comprising mentors, consultants, festival representatives and trainers in the film industry, those facing harassment often lack appropriate avenues to seek support and report harmful experiences. This is particularly problematic given the dependency of filmmakers on their gatekeepers to make their films, earn their livelihood and succeed in a challenging industry. It is the responsibility of the industry and its stakeholders to create the protocols and accountability schemes to ensure that spaces of power imbalance become safer, and that those who participate are embedded in a code of conduct that protects them.Building on the initial #Docsafe roundtable at the EFM earlier this year, we are continuing this initiative led by a global working group at DocFest.
