This vibrant film details the vast body of music produced by and for the Turkish diaspora in Germany from the 1960s to 1980s, and its influence on subsequent generations.
When the German Federal Republic drew up a recruitment agreement with Turkey in 1961, it didn’t just welcome a large workforce, it saw the arrival of a rich culture; in particular, a thriving music scene. Cem Kaya’s archive-driven film details how countless unknown singers, songwriters and musicians forged a career amongst a growing ex-pat population hungry to embrace Turkey’s rich traditions. Interviews with musicians and audience members from that golden era contrast with subsequent shifts in attitude towards the Turkish population, the rise in racist attacks and the response of modern musicians. Kaya’s compelling film presents an absorbing, rarely heard musical history.
